CDV of Union Soldier Holding Hardee Hat – Norwich, Connecticut Photographer - Inventory Number: CDV 584

This original Civil War carte de visite features a full-length studio portrait of an unidentified Union soldier in uniform, standing beside a chair with one hand resting on its back and the other holding a regulation Hardee-style hat, commonly associated with the Union Army’s dress attire. He wears a frock coat and light trousers, typical of enlisted men during the period.

Photographed by W.H. Jennings, a known 19th-century photographer operating from the corner of Main and Shetucket Streets in Norwich, Connecticut, as stamped on the reverse. The backmark notes: “Additional copies of this picture may be obtained by sending the name,” suggesting the subject was once known to the studio and perhaps regionally recognized. Clean, clear image with strong contrast and sharp details.

A sharp and evocative portrait that captures the dignity and posture of a wartime soldier. A fine addition for collectors of identified or regional Union photography.
