Civil War Chasseur Shako Hat Device - Inventory Number: INS 226 / Sold

Awarded to the 83rd and 62nd and 18th Massachusetts regiments for "proficiency in drill" by General McClellan of the Army of the Potomac in 1861. Ordered by the War Department from Paris as part of 10,000 complete chasseur uniforms.  These were issued to five Northern regiments including the 83rd and 62nd PA and 18th Mass.

Beautiful brass plate with American eagle with colorized shield and infantry horn. This example is mounted to a federal shield shaped display board from W. Stokes Kirk a renowned army surplus around the turn of the century.  Wonderful example for display.
