Awarded to the 83rd and 62nd and 18th Massachusetts regiments for "proficiency in drill" by General McClellan of the Army of the Potomac in 1861. Ordered by the War Department from Paris as part of 10,000 complete chasseur uniforms. These were issued to five Northern regiments including the 83rd and 62nd PA and 18th Mass.
