Civil War Confederate Medical Saddlebags Richmond, Virginia Manufacture - Inventory Number: MED 282
A rare and historically significant pair of Confederate medical saddlebags, manufactured in Richmond during the American Civil War. Constructed of heavy brown leather with iron hardware and hand-stitched detailing, these saddlebags were designed to carry medical supplies for Confederate surgeons in the field. Each side features multiple interior compartments for bottles, bandages, and surgical tools, many of which were standardized to Confederate medical specifications.
These bags exhibit the telltale characteristics of Richmond production, including the distinctively shaped “crows foot closure straps, coarse stitching, and minimalist iron buckles. While showing expected age and use, the leather remains supple with an attractive patina, and the interior compartments retain their original form. Confederate medical gear is far scarcer than its Union counterpart, and authentic Richmond examples are particularly prized by collectors.
A seldom-seen relic of Confederate field medicine—testament to the desperate and often rudimentary conditions faced by Southern surgeons on the war-torn battlefields of the Civil War.
