Civil War "Ditty" Pouch - Inventory Number: PER 090 / Sold
Designed to be worn on the belt, a “Ditty Bag” is a small
bag in which a soldier or sailor kept his valuables such as letters, small
souvenirs and sewing supplies. This wonderful Civil War example is a hand sewn
wool pouch that features a pair of tarred leather belt loops. The loops are affixed via two brass “flower
buttons” bearing Maltese crosses and floral boarders. The front of the pouch exhibits finely
hand-embroidered initials and date: “S + C – 1861”. The lining is polished cotton with a
wonderful paisley print throughout. The
closure button is a domed gutta percha button with “Goodyear” backmark. A fine example of a handmade soldier’s
accoutrement.
