A rare and remarkably well-preserved Civil War period U.S. Navy mustard bottle, still sealed with its original cork and retaining its original contents. Molded in light aqua glass, the bottle features a distinctive eight-panel design and is boldly embossed “U.S. NAVY” down one of the panels. And “MUSTARD” on the opposing side. These bottles were standard issue aboard Union naval vessels and contained prepared mustard used to season preserved rations and improve palatability during long deployments at sea.
Bottles of this type are uncommon, and surviving examples with intact corks and contents are particularly scarce. A tangible and evocative relic of Civil War naval life and daily sustenance aboard ship.
