Civil War Matches - Inventory Number: CAM 442
Original Civil War "Lucifer's" type issued by the U.S. Government. Matches were an extremely popular item, in fact, generally considered important for the welfare of the troops. Matches were sometimes sold in "strips," and several of these strips were wrapped in waxed paper and sold as a package. Matches were made of 1 piece of wood, cut/split into individual matches that could be broken off as needed by the soldier. Each end is tapered and coated with red material for striking. This example is accompanied by its original paper wrapper.
