Original Civil War matches or "Lucifers" as issued by the U.S. Government. Matches were an extremely popular item and important for the welfare of the troops. Matches were sometimes sold in "strips," and several of these strips were wrapped in waxed paper and sold as a package. Matches were made of 1 piece of wood, cut/split into individual matches that could be broken off as needed by the soldier. Each end is tapered and coated with red material for striking.
Comes housed in a 5 x 6 inch display case with black velvet backing and descriptive card.
