Civil War Saddle Valise - Inventory Number: LEA 261 / SOLD
The valise was a leather bag designed as a storage compartment for essential items and was strapped to the back of the saddle. It is constructed of thick leather with an outer flap secured by two closure straps. Two leather handles are affixed to each side. The interior is lined with blue striped pillow ticking. The interior closure strap and buckle are still present, as are the two main closure straps that hold the exterior flap closed. The leather is strong and supple with even crazing across the surface. The valise measures 20” by 8” when close. This valise has verbal provenance to an unknown Civil War surgeon. A fine addition to a Civil War saddle or medical display.
