Civil War Tintype of Pvt. William H. Smyser, Co. D, 1st P.H.B. - Inventory Number: HAR 231
A striking sixth-plate tintype of Private William H. Smyser in uniform, housed in a classic pressed leatherette case with ornate velvet lining and brass mat and frame. Pencil identification in case. Smyser served in Company D of the First Potomac Home Brigade, a unit organized for the defense of Maryland during the Civil War.
From the reknown collection of Daniel C. Toomey and published inhis works, this image captures Smyser in a seated pose, wearing a frock coat with brass buttons visible. His youthful expression and clear features make this a particularly compelling portrait. Included with the image is a typed identification slip reading:
“Private William H. Smyser, Company D, First P.H.B.”
