Civil War Travelling Apothecary Kit - Inventory Number: MED 298 / SOLD
A remarkable and well-preserved example of a apothecary kit, designed for use by physicians, pharmacists, or well-prepared travelers. This folding leather-covered case opens to reveal 19 original glass vials. Each vial fits snugly in tailored compartments, arranged in two tiers, and is secured with leather straps.
The outer case includes a working brass latch and hinged lid, with internal flaps to protect the fragile bottles. Some labels remain legible, hinting at a variety of medicinal compounds used during the period—ranging from common remedies to early pharmaceuticals.
This kit is a wonderful representation of the period’s portable medical practices and would make an excellent addition to any Civil War medical display, historical reenactment collection, or antique medical instrument collection.
