Colt Model 1849 Holster - Inventory Number: LEA 451

A nice condition holster made in full military configuration for a Colt 1849 pocket revolver. These .31 revolvers were not of military caliber, but were very popular sidearms with officers not willing to lug a large frame revolver on a long march. In this case the holster for one is configured like a standard military issue holster with a full flap, wide belt loop secured with stitching and rivets, and set up to hold the revolver with the butt facing forward on the wearer’s right side. The latch tab is lacking and would have been secured with a single line of straight stitching, which is a sign of early manufacture in a contract holster, but likely to have more leeway in a commercially produced holster for purchase by an officer.

The holster is russet brown leather and is in solid condition. The seams are tight. The body holds its shape. The latch tab and toe plug are in place. A popular revolver among westerners and travels heading for dangerous territory, Colt pockets are known to have been privately purchased by enlisted men or presented as gifts to soldiers, and we know of one reference that seems to have been an attempt to purchase some by a regiment for its band. This holster would fit especially well in a Civil War or officer’s display.
