Confederate / British Import 2.75 Whitworth Bolt - Inventory Number: CON 135 / Sold

12 Pdr Whitworth Rifle of 2.75 caliber.  Superb British workmanship is evident on this exotic projectile form.  Imported during the Civil War by both sides.

Designed by Sir Joseph Whitworth the projectile was cast of "mild steel" in the hexagon form and then sent through an automatic plane to precision - finish the six sides which appear flat but are actually slightly concave.  The rest of the unit was then shaped.  Whitworth designed his rifles so that they could be used as a breech or muzzleloader.  In most cases during the Civil War, because of trouble with the breech mechanism, the breeches were locked, and the rifle used as a muzzleloader.
