Confederate Bullet Mold from Fort Fisher N.C. - Inventory Number: CON 417 / SOLD
Original museum tag states: “Confederate Bullet Mould used in the Field. From Fort Fisher N.C.”
This rare Confederate iron bullet mold in excellent original condition is a .52 caliber Sharps 'Ringtail' bullet mold used for the Sharps breechloading rifle or carbine. The ball or bullet, commonly referred to as a 'ringtail' bullet, is known as a 'tie' base ring or 'tie' base groove bullet. This large mold produced the distinct 'lead head' and to form the entire cartridge, the paper was tied with twine to the bullet (ball) at the deep base ring or groove. Complete and in tight working order, the twin-handled, top-hinged box mold measures over 11¾" in overall length. Each 9" long handle exhibits the upper or head portion that is internally machined cut for the unique conical 'ringtail' bullet. This fine original accoutrement bears light use and exhibits no markings. A pleasant dusky-gray patina covers the entire surface of this accoutrement.
This mold was formerly part of a large collection from a Grand Army of the Republic Hall and Museum, it was mounted in the 1940’s to a display board and travelled the country as part of an exhibit by Phillip Dormont.
Comes housed in 8 x 14 riker display case with black velvet and descriptive card.
