Daniel Butterfield Autograph - Inventory Number:  AUT 129 / SOLD

Bold Ink signature: Daniel Butterfield – Bt. Maj. Genl U.S.A.

Daniel Butterfield was promoted to Major General of the Union Army in March 1863. He took part in major Civil War battles such as Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg, as well as both the Peninsula and Atlanta Campaigns. He was twice wounded and awarded the Medal of Honor following the Battle of Seven Days (June - July 1862). Butterfield is credited, around 1863, with starting the tradition of wearing a hat or shoulder insignia to differentiate between corps fighting units. In addition, Butterfield likely rewrote the funeral bugle call "Taps"; Butterfield's version of the melody is the one that we instantly recognize today.
