Exceptional 1835 Ames U.S. Artillery Short Sword Maker: N.P. Ames, Springfield, Mass. Dated: 1835 - Inventory Number: SWO 304

A superb example of the early U.S. regulation artillery short sword, patterned after the French Model 1816, with broad Roman gladius-style blade. This early production specimen, dated 1835, is among the first standardized edged weapons manufactured by Nathan P. Ames at his Springfield armory.

The straight, double-edged blade measures approximately 19 inches in length and remains in excellent condition with a bright finish, showing only minimal signs of age. The ricasso is clearly stamped “UNITED STATES / 1835” on one side and “N.P. AMES / SPRINGFIELD” on the reverse, both markings crisp and deeply struck.

The cast brass hilt retains its original untouched patina and features a bold eagle in relief on the obverse of the crossguard. The fish-scale grip remains well-defined with no wear or flattening, and the integral pommel is tight and undisturbed. A very nice scabbard is present, appears to have been painted silver at some time and the paint removed.

These early Ames swords predate the massive Civil War contracts and are highly prized by collectors for their historical significance and craftsmanship. A particularly fine and well-preserved example of this foundational American military edged weapon.
