Extremely Rare U.S. Model 1812 Cavalry Saber by William Rose - Inventory Number: SWO 309 / SOLD

    1 of 500 – Reverse - P Guard, Inspector Marked

An exceptionally rare and historically significant Model 1812 U.S. Cavalry Saber, manufactured by William Rose, one of the earliest American sword makers to contract with the federal government during the War of 1812 period. Only 500 sabers are believed to have been produced by Rose under this contract, making surviving examples exceedingly scarce.

The saber features a long, curved single-edged blade with a broad fuller, the obverse side deeply stamped with: “V” – indicating visual inspection. “GF” – for George Flegel, U.S. Inspector (active 1812–1823).  The spine is clearly marked “WM ROSE”.

The iron hilt is fitted with a distinctive reverse-P shaped knucklebow, pierced near the pommel for attachment of a sword knot. The grip, originally leather-wrapped over wood with twisted wire, may show wear consistent with age.

The original iron scabbard is present and remains in remarkable condition, featuring its original japanned black finish, two suspension rings, and no drag, exactly as produced. These early scabbards are rarely encountered intact.

Sabers of this type were issued to early U.S. light cavalry units during the War of 1812 and represent some of the first standardized American cavalry sabers.

Condition: Very good overall. Blade retains sharp edges with crisp inspector and maker’s marks. Hilt solid with untouched patina; pierced knucklebow intact. Scabbard is complete, with original japanning and suspension rings, free from major dents or corrosion. A truly rare and important early American military saber.
