This unfired Hotchkiss projectile is of a 1864-1865 production. The flat nose is fitted with a standard brass Hotchkiss time fuze plug. The body of the shell has three flame grooves which aided the propellant flame in reaching the paper time fuze. Slightly rounded base cup. Specimens have been recovered in Nashville, Tennessee, and at Spanish Fort, Alabama. Inspector mark, "JHS". Lead band sabot is not fired. Wright pattern 15 second time fuze is intact.
