Folding Bleeder (Fleam) – Inventory Number: MED 279

Civil War folding fleam, commonly referred to as a bleeder, used in both veterinary and early medical practices for bloodletting. Crafted from iron with a brass hinge, the tool features several folding lancet blades, each designed to make incisions for therapeutic bleeding—believed at the time to treat fevers, inflammation, and various ailments.

The brass pivot is clearly marked “TP6,” and the blades show honest patina and wear from use. These instruments were essential components in rural doctor or farrier kits and often carried by Civil War-era surgeons, veterinarians, or field medics.

This is a well-preserved example of early medical practice and a fascinating artifact of 19th-century beliefs in bodily humors and blood balance. A perfect addition to any collection of antique medical or veterinary tools.
