Gallager Carbine - Inventory Number: RIF 247

Serial #17,189, .50 Caliber with Iron Patchbox

A solid example of the Gallager Patent Carbine, serial number 17189, chambered in .50 caliber percussion. Manufactured by Richardson & Overman of Philadelphia, the Gallager was a breechloading, single-shot carbine widely issued to Federal cavalry units during the Civil War.

This carbine features a 22¼-inch barrel, iron frame, and a distinctively shaped hammer and breech lever mechanism. The iron patchbox in the right side of the buttstock is a standard feature on mid-war production models and remains intact. The serial number 17189 is clearly marked on the receiver tang.

Originally issued with brass or iron furniture depending on production run, this example reflects the robust wartime design later replaced by metallic cartridge models. Gallager carbines were carried by many Union cavalry regiments, including the 2nd and 6th Ohio, 13th Tennessee (Union), and others.

Condition: Very good. Metal retains smooth, dark patina with crisp markings. Mechanically functional. Wood shows light handling wear and remains solid with tight fit. Iron patchbox complete and functional.
