G.A.R. Delegate Badge – 24th Annual Indiana Department Encampment - Inventory Number: VET 363

    1905 Anderson, Indiana – May 12–14, 1905

This elaborate Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) delegate badge was issued for the 24th Annual Encampment of the Department of Indiana, held in Anderson, Indiana, from May 12–14, 1905. The ribbon features a patriotic red, white, and blue silk field, gold-stamped lettering, and a brass bar marked “DELEGATE,” accented with a tiny American flag.

At the center is a circular medallion with a printed portrait of Chief Anderson, namesake of the host city, set in an ornate silver-tone frame. Suspended from the ribbon is the iconic G.A.R. five-pointed star medal, symbolizing fraternity, loyalty, and patriotism—the core values of the organization.

The G.A.R. was the premier fraternal organization for Union Civil War veterans, and encampments served as both commemorative and administrative gatherings. This ribbon reflects the pride, pageantry, and continued civic involvement of veterans into the early 20th century.
