Gettysburg 1902 National Guard of Pennsylvania Glass - Inventory Number: GET 476 / SOLD
This item is a commemorative cup for those Pennsylvania guardsmen who participated in a great camp out in 1902 at the Gettysburg Battlefield site. The National Guard of Pennsylvania was founded in 1747 and is, currently, one of the oldest organizations in the U.S. They had a long-standing tradition, along with other military groups, of utilizing America’s battlefields as teaching tools. Beginning in 1884, then again in 1894, and shortly following the creation of Gettysburg as a National Historic site, the Pennsylvania National Guard held weeklong encampments on the site. 9,500 men encamped from the PA Guard in 1902, and this cup commemorates that experience.
The cup measures 4” tall and 2 3/8” at the base. It is an aurora pattern pressed glass cobalt blue. There is a transfer pattern that reads “N.G.P/ ENCAMPMENT/ GETTYSBURG/ 1902” in gold on the front. The rim is gold and has dulled by age. Cup is in good condition, no scrapes or cracks.
