    Misdemeanor Charge for “Fornication on a Certain Lydia C. Mathias and a Male Bastard Child”

    Adams County court document from “Commonwealth v. Amos Carbaugh” regarding the misdemeanor charge of fornication bastardy, dated April 21, 1862. It reads “The Grand Inquest of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, inquiring within and for the County aforesaid, on their oaths and affirmations respectively, do present, that Amos Carbaugh late of the County of Adams, yeoman on the nineteenth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty two at the County aforesaid, and within the jurisdiction of this Court, did commit fornication with a certain Lydia C. Mathias and a Male bastard child on the body of her the said Lydia C. Mathias then and there did beget, contrary to the form of the Act of Assembly in such case made and provided, and against the peace and dignity of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.”  The document measures 7 ½” by 6” and is in very good, well-preserved condition. A scarce and unique wartime document from Adams County.
