The South Carolina Secession Convention was held Dec. 20, 1860.
Major Robert Anderson and his men evacuated Charleston on Dec. 27, 1860 and went to Fort Sumter. The 1st SC Infantry was organized in Dec. 1860 and entered into Confederate service in May, 1861. The 1st SC, also known as the 3d Artillery, participated in the bombardment of Fort Sumter starting on April 12, 1861.
The surviving 1st SC members surrendered April 26, 1865. Henry Jones received this copy of his parole on August 2, 1865 at Chesterfield County Courthouse, SC although the courthouse building was burned by Gen. Sherman's men on March 2, 1865. It is claimed that this courthouse was the site of the first 1860 secession meeting.
A great document that belonged to a member of an early South Carolina unit.

1st Regiment, South Carolina Infantry (Butler's) (1st Regulars)
3rd Heavy Artillery Regiment [also called 1st Regulars or Enlisted Men] was organized in December, 1860, with eight companies, later increased to ten. The men were recruited in Charleston, Columbia, and Cheraw, and the counties of Greenville, Lancaster, Chesterfield, and Anderson. The unit trained as infantry and artillery, and served in the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. It took an active part in many conflicts in and around Charleston. In September, 1862, the unit contained 628 effectives and during the operations on Morris Island, July 10 to September 6, 1863, it lost 10 killed, 32 wounded, and 22 missing. In January, 1865, it was assigned to Colonel A.
Rhett's Brigade and, serving as infantry, was active in the North Carolina Campaign. The unit surrendered on April 26, 1865. Its commanders were Colonels Richard H. Anderson, William Butler, and John Dunovant; Lieutenant Colonels Thomas M. Baker, Barnard E.
Bee, Robert De Treville, and John C. Simkins; and Majors Warren Adams and Thomas
A. Huguenin.
