Horatio Gouverneur Wright Signature - Inventory Number: AUT 107
Horatio Gouverneur Wright was born in Clinton, Connecticut on March 6, 1820, was graduated from West Point in the Class of 1841 and placed second in his class. In 1842 he was appointed Professor of French at the Academy. Later he was placed in charge of the construction of forts and improvements in Florida following which he was promoted to Captain and served as assistant chief engineer in Washington until the outbreak of the Civil War. In August, 1861 he was promoted to Major and on September 14* of the same year he was made Brigadier General of Volunteers and commanded the land forces in the Florida Campaign of 1862; later in July he was promoted to Major General and in April, 1863 was given charge of a division of the Army of the Potomac. General Wright retired from active service on March 22, 1884 and died on July 2, 1899.
