Embossed leather covered wood case with red velvet lining.  Case retains its original makers label: Horatio G. Kern - Manufacturer of Surgical and Dental Instruments, syringes, elastic Trusses, $c. 25 N. Sixth St. Philada." 

Kern was a supplier of contracted surgical sets and instruments for the U.S. Army during the Civil War.  Kern was second only to Snowden and Brother in the size of his surgical instrument production in Philadelphia at the beginning of the Civil War.

Case contains seven original ivory handled scalpels.  Case measures 9 1/4" x 4 3/8" x 1 1/4".
