Horstmann Model 1840 Cavalry Saber from Gettysburg Estate - Inventory Number: SWO 239 / SOLD
Model 1840 “wristbreaker” cavalry saber assembled by W. H. Horstmann and Sons of Philadelphia, originally from a local Gettysburg estate. The ricasso is stamped “HORSTMANN / PHILA” on one side, with the keystone shaped stamp on the opposite side of Emmerson & Silver of New Jersey. The blade has taken on a plum brown patina, save for a 4” section towards the end. The brass guard has a dark, uncleaned patina with areas of verdigris. About 40 percent of the leather grip remains, with the wire wrap absent. The scabbard is in good condition with an even brown patina overall. An interesting, attic condition 1840 saber from the Gettysburg area.
