Inscribed Pocket Bible Pvt. Lewis P. Vandergrift, 1st New Jersey Cavalry - Inventory Number: HIS 216 / SOLD

Killed in Action June 22, 1863 near Aldie Gap, Virginia

    (Gettysburg Campaign)

Presented to Vandergrift "by the ladies of Bordentown", this pocket bible accompanied the young horse soldier during his nearly two years in the Union Army. A member of the 1st New Jersey Cavalry born and raised in Bordentown, he was struck and killed by a "random artillery shell lobbed inside the regiment's line" while skirmishing near Aldie Gap, Virginia during the early part of the Gettysburg Campaign.

Inscribed in ink "Presented to Louis Vandergrift by the ladies of Bordentown" on the inside front cover; Vandergrift seems to add his own patriotic ink inscription on the adjacent page:

    Washington

First in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen.

Comes housed in 8 x 12 riker display case with black velvet and descriptive card.
