James A. Garfield Parian Bust – 19th Century Memorial Sculpture - Inventory Number: SCU 082
This finely detailed Parian ware bust depicts President James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States. The back of the sculpture is incised “GARFIELD,” identifying the subject. Rendered in a formal double-breasted coat with bow tie and full beard, this piece reflects the neoclassical style popular in late 19th-century memorial portraiture.
Parian ware—an unglazed, white porcelain made to resemble carved marble—was commonly used in the Victorian era for commemorative busts of notable figures. Following Garfield’s tragic assassination in 1881, items such as this were produced in tribute and remembrance.
Measures approximately 10” in height ad 8” wide.
A poignant piece of presidential memorabilia, ideal for collectors of political artifacts or Victorian decorative arts.
