Rare 1887 Life Membership Certificate to the Military Service Institution of the United States — Issued to Brevet Major General John Gibbon and Signed by General Winfield Scott Hancock
An exceptionally rare and historically significant document issued to John Gibbon, celebrated Union general of the American Civil War, confirming his life membership in the Military Service Institution of the United States. This ornate certificate, dated May 4, 1887, recognizes Gibbon’s long and distinguished service, listing his rank as Colonel, 7th Regiment Infantry – Brevet Major General, U.S.A.
Beautifully engraved and featuring an American eagle and flags vignette at top, the document is signed by Major General Winfield Scott Hancock, then President of the Institution, and J.P. Rodenbough, noted military author and historian, as Recording Secretary.
Formed in 1878, the Military Service Institution was created by and for officers of the United States Army to foster professional development and military scholarship. This certificate not only honors one of the most respected generals of the Union Army—whose battlefield leadership included Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg (notably the defense of Cemetery Ridge), and Appomattox—but also carries the autograph of his peer and fellow Gettysburg hero, General Hancock.
