Macerated Currency Souvenir Pitcher - Inventory Number: CUR 172
Beginning in 1874, the Treasury Department began utilizing a new method of destroying old withdrawn currency. Old currency would be ground up and made into a pulp. Once discovered that this pulp could be made into souvenirs it was obtained by enterprising individuals then formed into objects to sell. This example dates from the late 19th century.
