Excellent example of Victorian “Magic Lantern”

Beginning in the early 1800s, British “lanternists” brought projections of painted or photographed images to life via sound effects, narration and various personal touches. These 3D slides and moving sequences, which were like modern-day GIFs, quickly became a staple of Victorian entertainment.

This example is an early brass version with a whale oil lamp constructed of japanned tin.  The slide compartment is supported by a cast iron mythological figurine.  A truly attractive early specimen of the predecessor or modern-day entertainment.
