Mansfield & Lamb Model 1860 Cavalry Saber - Inventory Number: SWO 301
Made in Forestdale, Rhode Island
This is a fine example of a Model 1860 light cavalry saber, manufactured by Mansfield & Lamb of Forestdale, Rhode Island, under U.S. government contract during the American Civil War.
Known primarily for their edged weapons, Mansfield & Lamb was a major wartime supplier of cavalry sabers, infantry swords, and bayonets.
The saber features a slightly curved 35-inch blade, single fuller, and a brass guard with three branches, all fitted to a leather-covered grip wrapped in twisted brass wire. Dated 1864.
Unlike earlier heavy sabers, the Model 1860 was lighter and more manageable on horseback, making it the standard issue for Union cavalry. Mansfield & Lamb-produced sabers are particularly collectible due to their high quality and wartime production volume.
Many of these blades saw service with Union cavalry regiments across campaigns from the Eastern Theater to the Western frontier.
