Although the state remained in the Union during the Civil War, Maryland had a significant portion of the population loyal to the southern cause. This card was printed and distributed early in the war to promote the enlistment of Marylanders into the Confederate army. The card displays the Confederate First National Flag (Stars and Bars) and reads “SOUTHERN RIGHTS, MARYLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN TO DO HIS DUTY. “Don’t tread on us.”” Housed in a highly decorative period fabric and copper hanging frame measuring 4 ¾” by 3 1/2”. A rare piece of Maryland Confederate memorabilia.
