Medical Saddle Bags - Inventory Number: MED 263
Medical saddle bags were carried by surgeons in the field to hold a variety of medicines. These leather saddle bags were the means for which to transport medicine with the physician on horseback for the treatment of the sick and wounded. The saddle bags were made of leather and designed to carry smaller quantities than apothecary chests, making it easier for the surgeons to move about. Bags are in still but pliable condition with no tears but show some light seam separations at the stitching in spots. only very minimal crazing from age. The small closure tabs and buckles are lacking. Total length 31”.
