Midsummer Night - Inventory Number: CDV 374 / SOLD
Image of two young women embracing atop a bed titled Midsummer Night. These CDV's were sold by sutlers to Civil War soldiers. A sutler usually built stores close to army encampments and sold provisions and supplies. To avoid any problems with the Christian Commission or the Sanitary Commission, they would claim they were "art" and nothing pornographic.
The printing on the bottom of the CDV reads: Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1864, by John P. Soule, in the Clerk’s Office of the District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
Reverse is stamped Boston.
