Militia NCO sword circa 1850-1865. Classic knight’s head pommel with a ribbed bone grip. The guard consists of cross quillons with a stippled pattern on guard and langets. The blade is 25” and marked “W.H. Horstmann & Sons” and “Philadelphia” on opposite sides of the ricasso. The blade has acid etchings of floral designs, spears, cannons, and a Native American in feathered headdress. There is some wobble to the guard from shrinkage to the bone handle. The scabbard is brown leather with brass fittings and the remains of the frog. Many of these swords saw service in the Civil War, and this is an attractive example.
