Model 1855 Cartridge Box - Inventory Number: LEA 448
Model 1855 cartridge box in excellent condition with original brown finish. This fine example was manufactured by Garcelon & Covell. The box is complete with US plate, both tins and both roller buckles. It’s clearly stamped “1863 Lewiston Maine”. Tins are present. Leather is smooth with truly little crackling to the surface. Very representable example of this classic soldier’s accoutrement, designed for Infantry soldiers to carry 40 rounds of ammunition - bullets and gunpowder charges wrapped in paper - in two tin compartments of their cartridge boxes. These could be worn on the belt, but since they were heavy when loaded, they often were worn on belts over the left shoulder, with the box resting on the right hip.
