Model 1855 Pistol Carbine - Inventory Number: HAN 187 / SOLD

The Model 1855 Pistol Carbine was a unique design intended to be used as a pistol on horseback and as a carbine on foot with the addition of a detachable stock. This US Model 1855 Percussion Pistol Carbine was manufactured by Springfield Armor in 1855. It has a .58 caliber rifled bore with a 12” barrel with faceted breech. The two-leaf rear sight is graduated to 400 yards. The lock is marked “U.S. SPRINGFIELD” forward of hammer and is dated 1855 behind the hammer. The Maynard tape priming system still functions flawlessly. The ramrod is attached to underside of barrel with a swivel device. Barrel tang is dated “1855”. The V/P Eagle proof is visible in barrel breech. All iron is -bright with some minor scattered light pitting. All brass has nice pleasing patina. The walnut stock is in very good condition with normal signs of use. There is a faint cartouche on side opposite of lock. 4,021 pistol carbines were produced between 1855 and 1857. A unique and very attractive Civil War period firearm.
