New York Veteran of Gettysburg Ribbon for the Dedication of the State Monument of New York 1893– Inventory Number: GET 472
New York troops were heavily engaged in battle and some 6,700 New Yorkers became casualties, including 82 officers and 912 enlisted men killed and another 306 officers and 3763 enlisted men wounded, with the remainder captured or missing. The New York state monument was dedicated July 2, 1893, the day titled “New York Day” at Gettysburg. This blue ribbon with gold lettering was specifically for New York veterans in attendance for the ceremonies. “VETERAN” appears at the top with the New York state seal beneath. Under that in a curve is “GETTYSBURG,” “JULY 1-2-3,” and “1893.”
“Fully 2,000 veterans, representing ninety-two New York regiments, will go at the expense of the State to Gettysburg to participate in the ceremonies which are to take place there on July 1, 2, and 3. Many other veterans will go at their own expense, and it is estimated that between 6,000 and 10,000 men will witness the dedication of New York’s monument on July 2.”
