North Carolina Model 1833 Dragoon Saber - Inventory Number:  SWO 286 / SOLD

This is a fine condition 1833 Ames Dragoon saber surcharged to the State of North Carolina. Scabbard on this sword retains most of its original brown finish mixing with patina. The “N. Carolina” marking in drag is crisp as is the inspector and “NC” stamped in quillon. State of North Carolina dragoon sabers are scarce. This specimen retains its original protective washer and is maker marked “NP Ames, Cuttler, Springfield, 1837”.

Blade is gray/bright with areas patina smooth discoloration. Blade is clean overall with the etched patterns of United States and makers marking being fully discernible.  The russet-colored leather grip retains 100% original leather and wound with fine, tight, double-twist wire. The leather grip surface still retains much of its original shine. Base of the ricasso has a complete leather washer. Atop the grips is a brass backstrap that extends to the three-tiered brass pommel cap. Brass guard has two branches on the obverse side of the knucklebow and one small branch on the reverse side. Knucklebow has a narrow slot for a saber strap. Brass quillon with its disc style is inspector-stamped with “WS” along with a larger stamp of “N.C.”

The scabbard is very nice overall with a few small dents. The drag bears the correct North Carolina marking spelled out.  It is clear it has never been cleaned. Rings and mounts are iron and tight to the scabbard body.
