Original Civil War-Era Ivory Page Day Diary - Inventory Number: PER 459

An evocative and rare Civil War-period personal day diary, featuring finely polished ivory or “ivorine” pages, commonly used in the mid-19th century for reusable writing surfaces. Housed in a compact pocket-sized format, this diary was designed for field use by officers or civilians, allowing notes to be written in pencil and later erased or transferred. Consists of eight small pages of natural ivory, all hinged at one end with a single rivet.  The pages are stamped at the top edge with a different day of the week from Monday through Saturday. The inner pages are protected with a thicker ivory outer page cover at front and back.

Typically bound in leather or oilcloth, these diaries were a practical tool during the war and are now prized for their historical association and scarcity. An elegant and utilitarian relic of the Civil War era.

Comes housed in 8 x 6 riker display case with red velvet and descriptive card.
