Civil War US issued smooth side canteen. This one is missing the bottom strap loop. One of the loops has a hole punched in it for the stopper chain, which is typical of New York Depot canteens. The pewter spout retains the original cork stopper. The canteen is covered with a cream-colored paint and has the remnants of two paper United States flags pasted on the front, with “1868” in black paint between them. The back has the remnants of an old paper tag with an ink inscription. This was likely painted by the veteran who carried in during the war. A nice Civil War canteen and piece of folk art.
