Presentation Sword of Lieutenant James E. B. Dalzell 4th Pennsylvania Cavalry - Inventory Number: SWO 272 / SOLD
U.S. non-regulation British pattern 1827 officer sword. Made by W. Walscheid in Solingen in Solingen, Germany. Blade is approximately 31” with line engraving. Ricasso is marked “W. Walscheid Solingen”. The other side of the ricasso has a brass insert with “Proved” in middle. Rayskin in wire wrap grip is particularly good. Scabbard is very good with pleasing patina and the inscription:
Shot in the Face and lost his right eye at the Battle of Saint Mary’s Church, VA.
“He received a gunshot wound on the 24th day of June, 1864. The ball struck in the left side of the left eye and passed through and carried left eye away entirely and partly destroyed the sight of the right eye” “entirely destroying vision, and producing great deformity, from contraction of eye lids, passed across the nose, and made exit at the right temple.”
He was co-owner of Dalzell Iron Works with his brother in Sharpsburgh, Pa (5 miles from Pittsburgh) sold in 1863.
He served as Allegheny Fire Department Chaiman in 1870.
In 1884 he became suddenly and violently insane and was confined to his house and at times was so violent that he had to be placed in a “straight jacket” he had to be watched day and night.
