    Rare Civil War-Era Patriotic Valentine with Original Envelope - Inventory Number: DOC 396

    Dated February 1863 — Addressed to Miss Nancy Boardman of North Danvers, Massachusetts

    A poignant and beautifully preserved Civil War-period valentine, featuring elaborate lace-embossed paper and a hand-colored patriotic motif depicting a Union naval vessel flying the American flag. The cover includes a fold-out flap revealing a chromolithographed camp scene of an officer writing home in vibrant red, blue, and yellow tones. Affixed to the inside is a printed sentimental poem titled “True to Thee,” pledging the enduring loyalty of a soldier’s heart:

    “The merit of a soldier’s heart,

    In tempests tried, is steel;

    Still firm and trusty as his steel,

    As when we first our love did feel.”

    Accompanied by the original matching embossed envelope, postmarked Boston, Mass., February [1863], with a large red manuscript “5” postage rate. Neatly addressed in ink to Miss Nancy Boardman, North Danvers, Mass.

    A quintessential example of wartime sentimental correspondence, combining patriotic pride with romantic devotion. These types of valentines were frequently sent by Union soldiers to their sweethearts back home during the Civil War, often as emotional tokens of fidelity and hope. The preservation of both card and envelope enhances its desirability to collectors of Civil War ephemera and historic American valentines.

    Excellent overall with minor toning and light wear consistent with age. The fold-out flap remains intact. Envelope and valentine show matching embossed decoration, indicating original pairing.

    Comes housed in 12 x 16 riker display case with blue velvet and descriptive card.
