Remington Model 1858 Army Revolver Excellent Condition with 80% Blue Finish - Inventory Number: HAN 359 / SOLD
An outstanding and well-preserved example of the iconic Remington Model 1858 Army Revolver, the second most widely issued revolver of the Civil War, highly valued for its durability, solid-frame design, and ease of maintenance in the field.
This .44 caliber percussion revolver remains in excellent condition, retaining approximately 80% of its original high-polish blue finish, especially strong on the barrel and loading lever. The frame and cylinder show smooth, clean surfaces with only minor edge wear, highlighting the crisp contours and well-defined lines of the revolver’s construction.
The barrel is clearly stamped: “PATENTED SEPT. 14, 1858 / E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, N.Y. / NEW MODEL”, with all factory markings sharp and legible.
The walnut grips are excellent, tight-fitting with a rich, original finish and displaying deep, boldly struck inspector’s cartouches on both sides—clear indicators of U.S. military acceptance. The action is mechanically excellent, with tight indexing and strong cylinder lockup.
Often considered superior to the Colt in terms of strength and field serviceability, the Remington 1858 Army saw widespread use by Union cavalry and artillery units from 1863 onward. Surviving examples with this level of original finish and crisp government inspection marks are increasingly scarce.
A truly superb specimen of one of the most important sidearms of the Civil War.
