Smith Carbine – Near Mint Condition - Inventory Number: RIF 100 / SOLD
The .50 caliber barrel retains its original blue throughout and is free of any imperfections. Bore is excellent.
Receiver retains strong original case colors as does the hammer and bolster. Original nipple is present. Action is excellent and works properly. Left side of the receiver has crisp markings of “MANUFACTURED BY/ AMN M’CH’N WKS/SPRINGFIELD, MASS.” as well as “SMITH’S PATENT / JUNE 23, 1857” and “ADDRESS / POULTNEY & TRIMBLE / BALTIMORE U.S.A.” Bottom of receiver is marked with serial number 10,792.
Excellent two-piece black walnut stock with a 9” forearm held by a single barrel band. Stock retains its original feathered. There are two crisp cartouche marks “HDH” & “JH” on the left side of the wrist.
Triggerguard retains 98% of its original blue. Saddle bar and ring are present. Buttplate has turned a plumb brown. Screw heads are good.
The Smith carbine saw service with the following volunteer cavalry regiments: 1st Connecticut, 1st Massachusetts, 6th and 9th Ohio, 7th and 17th PA, 7th and 11th Illinois and the 3rd West Virginia Regiments.
