Springfield Model 1863 - Inventory Number: C-RIF 085 / SOLD
Springfield Model 1863, Type 2, .58 caliber, single-shot muzzleloader. This rifled-musket, a government arsenal product from Springfield, Massachusetts.
All gunmetal exhibits a dull, light gray patina. Lock exhibits the “spreadwinged eagle” and “US / SPRINGFIELD” in sharp and clear stampings. Date “1864” stamped behind the hammer. Barrel breech area exhibits a very faint date on the flat. Strong barrel proof marks are visible on the left barrel facet. Original nipple and rear sight. Mechanics crisp. Bore has good rifling present. Steel tulip-shaped ramrod is original. All barrel bands original, stamped with small “U” and secured to the stock via band springs.
Black walnut stock surface in good condition. Stock is solid with no cracks, splits. Flat has worn edges but still retains a visible government cartouche. Stock bears some light handling marks from use and age. Original leather musket sling, is complete and still attached to both sling swivels. An original tompion is present as well. A very representative Model 1863 Springfield rifle musket of the Civil War.
