Standard Federal Issue 1864 Contact Knapsack - Inventory Number: LEA 194 /SOLD
A very good example of the standard issue double bag knapsack constructed of painted canvas which retains nearly all of the buckles and straps. Shoulder harness excellent. The bag opens to reveal two inside pockets. One has a flap with leather ties while the other has four folds that come together and buckle into place to form a pocket. All the roller buckles and leather ties are present. The surface of some straps has minor crackling with finish loss. The others are good. Maker mark is present as is the inspector's mark: "F. Valentine U.S. Inspector" Bottom of one of the bags has a split along outside fold that measures approximately 6" long. When the bag is open one of the sides has a few minor holes, but minimal loss. All four anchors for the blanket straps are present along the top. Bag has been stuffed with acid free batting to keep its shape and displays well. Nice representative example of this basic piece of the Civil War Union soldier's equipment and becoming increasingly hard to find ion this good complete condition.
