State of New York Belt Plate – Inventory Number: BEL 582

Maker Marked H.A. Dingee This small pattern 1839 oval belt plate is in excellent condition, with the arrowhead belt stud and fastening hook in place on the back, with its full lead-solder fill, and the face showing good definition to the letters and raised rim.

New York followed federal patterns in its plates of the 1850s and 1860s, bringing in the arrow-back style in 1863, and issuing it on accoutrements with a matching cartridge box plate. These are die-struck rolled brass with a lead solder fill to add stiffness and secure the belt hooks.

These were intended for the state’s militia, but O’Donnell and Campbell note some of this pattern made their way into the field, having been found on the Wilderness battlefield of May 1864.

Comes housed in 6 x 8 riker display case with blue velvet and descriptive card.
