Three Barrel Manhattan Pepperbox - Inventory Number:  HAN 325

The Manhattan Arms Company was a significant player in the firearms industry during the mid-19th century. Founded in 1856, it was based in Newark, New Jersey. The company quickly gained prominence for its innovative designs and quality craftsmanship, particularly in the realm of revolvers and pistols.

Manhattan Arms Co. was a direct competitor to other renowned firearm manufacturers of the time, including Colt, Remington, and Smith & Wesson. Their firearms, including the pepperbox pistols, were highly regarded for their reliability and effectiveness, earning them popularity among both civilian and military markets.

The Manhattan Arms Co. pepperbox pistols featured a unique design with multiple barrels (typically five) arranged in a triangular pattern around a central axis. This configuration allowed for quick successive shots without the need for reloading.

Caliber: The .31 caliber variant was among the most common produced by Manhattan Arms Co. It provided a balance between firepower and manageability.

Popularity during the Civil War: Manhattan Arms pepperbox pistols saw extensive use during the Civil War period. They were favored by both Union and Confederate soldiers for their compact size, ease of use, and rapid firing capability. These pistols were often carried as sidearms by officers and cavalrymen.              Limited Production: Despite their popularity, Manhattan Arms Co. pepperbox pistols were produced in relatively limited quantities compared to some of their competitors. The estimated production figure of around 3,000 units adds to their rarity and collectability.

Condition:  .31 caliber 3" barrel cluster with light oxidized bores.  The metal surfaces have evenly toned to an antique gray patina with scattered areas of faint pinprick pitting. The bag shaped Walnut grips rate near excellent barrel rib is marked: MANHATTAN F.A. MFG.CO / NEW YORK.

Due to their historical significance, limited production numbers, and association with the Civil War, Manhattan Arms Co. pepperbox pistols are highly sought after by collectors of antique firearms. Their value can vary greatly depending on factors such as condition, rarity of specific models, and historical provenance. A well-preserved example of the .31 caliber 3-shot pepperbox pistol with a 3" barrel, highly desirable among collectors of Civil War-era firearms.

This pistol represents a rare and historically significant firearm from the Civil War era. Its innovative design, association with both Union and Confederate forces, and limited production make it a prized collectible for enthusiasts of antique firearms and military history alike.
